Book Quote #7: “Straight people really should have to come out”

mykidisgay-23c26ba0

“It is definitely annoying that straight (and white, for that matter) is the default, and that the only people who have to think about their identity are the ones who don’t fit that mold. Straight people really should have to come out, and the more awkward it is, the better. Awkwardness should be a requirement.”

― Becky Albertalli, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda

Can you imagine that? A world where being straight and cis-gendered is not the assumption? A world where, at a certain age, everyone has to go to their family and their friends and declare whether they are straight, gay, lesbian, transgendered, bisexual, or something else, and have that awkward and uncomfortable conversation?

I am truly optimistic that, one day, there will be no assumptions about sexuality, no stigma, and that is how the world will become. Who is with me?

Simon Vs, by the way, is an AMAZING novel that everyone should read.

I have another favourite quote from this novel, and I really couldn’t choose between the two. Here it is:

“People really are like house with vast rooms and tiny windows. And maybe it’s a good thing, the way we never stop surprising each other.”

― Becky Albertalli, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda

How well do we really know our next-door neighbour? Our coworkers? Our friends and our family? How well do they know us? Maybe it is a good thing that there is always more to discover.

What are your favourite quotes this week?

Cheers,

Sophie

PS. I am changing my post schedule to Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday! This is to give myself more time to write posts, and also to give you guys more time to read them.

  1. I dream of a day where sexuality and gender are never assumed, but also a day where sharing your sexuality or gender with people isn’t awkward. It just is, and people are like, “Cool, now i know more about you.”

I do fear i won’t see that day in my own life time 😦

    • Yeah I know what you mean. Right now coming out is a big deal, maybe one day it won’t be, and people will just be like “cool story bro”… one day! I think I am hopeful but I don’t know how long it will take for us to get there!
